At St Martin’s Catholic Primary School, we deliver Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and PSHE through the Life to the Full Plus programme by Ten Ten, rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church and guided by our mission, “Learning to live by faith and be known by love.”
We believe that every child is created in the image and likeness of God and is therefore deserving of dignity, respect and love. Through our RSHE and PSHE curriculum, we nurture the whole child—spiritually, morally, socially, emotionally and physically—enabling them to flourish and become confident, compassionate members of society.
Our curriculum is underpinned by Catholic Social Teaching and supports children in understanding themselves, their relationships and their responsibilities within God’s world.
At St Martin’s, we aim to:
- Enable children to understand that they are uniquely created and unconditionally loved by God.
- Promote positive relationships rooted in love, respect, dignity and compassion.
- Support children in developing the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed and responsible choices.
- Encourage children to celebrate diversity and recognise the value of every individual.
- Develop emotional literacy, resilience and wellbeing.
- Promote healthy lifestyles and an understanding of physical and mental health.
- Equip children with the skills to keep themselves safe, both online and offline.
- Ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can access and succeed within the curriculum.
Catholic Ethos and Catholic Social Teaching
Our RSHE and PSHE curriculum reflects the principles of Catholic Social Teaching by promoting:
- Human Dignity – recognising that every person is made in the image and likeness of God.
- The Common Good – encouraging children to contribute positively to their communities.
- Solidarity – fostering empathy, kindness and understanding.
- Participation – ensuring every child feels valued and included.
- Stewardship – helping children understand their responsibility to care for God’s creation.
Children are encouraged to explore their feelings, build healthy relationships and understand how they can use their God-given gifts to serve others and make a positive difference in the world.
Implementation
At St Martin’s, we deliver RSHE and PSHE through Ten Ten’s Life to the Full Plus programme, which is approved by the Catholic Education Service and fully aligned with statutory Relationships Education and Health Education requirements.
The programme is carefully sequenced to ensure progression across all year groups and is delivered in an age-appropriate and sensitive manner.
Life to the Full Plus is organised into three key modules:
Created and Loved by God
Children learn that they are uniquely made and deeply loved by God. This module promotes self-worth, emotional wellbeing and an appreciation of each person’s uniqueness.
Created to Love Others
Children explore friendships, family life and relationships. They learn about respect, compassion, forgiveness and how to build healthy and safe relationships.
Created to Live in Community
Children develop an understanding of their role within the wider world and are encouraged to contribute positively to their communities through service, stewardship and active citizenship.
At St Martin’s:
- RSHE and PSHE are taught regularly across all year groups.
- Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners.
- Teachers provide a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for discussion.
- Learning is enriched through prayer, reflection and links to Catholic Social Teaching.
- Children are taught strategies to support their mental health, wellbeing and personal safety.
- Opportunities are provided for children to discuss current issues and understand their role as responsible citizens.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children’s Personal, Social and Emotional Development is supported through the EYFS Framework alongside age-appropriate elements of the Life to the Full Plus programme.
Impact
Through our RSHE and PSHE curriculum, pupils leave St Martin’s with the knowledge, understanding and confidence to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Our pupils:
- Understand that they are loved by God and valued as unique individuals.
- Develop healthy, respectful and positive relationships.
- Demonstrate empathy, kindness and compassion towards others.
- Understand the importance of physical and mental wellbeing.
- Make informed choices and know how to keep themselves safe.
- Show resilience and confidence when facing challenges.
- Respect and celebrate the diversity of the communities in which they live.
- Recognise their responsibility to contribute positively to society and care for God’s world.
Ultimately, children leave St Martin’s ready to live out our mission of “Learning to live by faith and be known by love.” They are equipped with the knowledge, values and skills needed to live life to the full and make a meaningful contribution to their communities.
