The Write Stuff – Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At St Martin’s Catholic Primary School, we use The Write Stuff by Jane Considine to develop confident, articulate and enthusiastic writers. Our aim is to ensure that all pupils acquire a rich vocabulary, a secure understanding of grammar and punctuation, and the skills needed to write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences.

Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, we strive to foster a love of writing and provide children with the tools to express themselves creatively and accurately. We believe that every child can become a successful writer and that high-quality writing is a key to future success across the curriculum and beyond.

Our writing curriculum is designed to:

• Develop children’s stamina and enjoyment of writing.
• Build a rich and ambitious vocabulary.
• Ensure progression in writing skills from Reception to Year 6.
• Enable children to write with increasing independence, accuracy and confidence.
• Provide opportunities for children to write across a range of genres and curriculum areas.
• Support all learners, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, through adaptive teaching strategies.

Implementation

The Write Stuff is taught consistently across the school and is underpinned by Jane Considine’s research-based approach to writing instruction.

Lessons are structured around high-quality texts and use the three key elements of:

• The FANTASTICs – developing ideas and composition.
• The GRAMMARISTICs – teaching grammar and sentence structure.
• The BOOMTASTICs – enhancing vocabulary and authorial techniques.

Children are immersed in language-rich environments and are provided with opportunities to:

• Participate in shared and modelled writing.
• Develop sentence-level skills through sentence stacking lessons.
• Edit and improve their work using teacher and peer feedback.
• Apply their learning independently across the curriculum.
• Explore ambitious vocabulary and effective writing techniques.

Teachers use explicit modelling to demonstrate the writing process, enabling pupils to understand how successful writing is constructed. Learning is carefully scaffolded to ensure all children can access the curriculum while also providing challenge for those working at greater depth.

Assessment is ongoing and informs planning, ensuring that gaps in knowledge are identified and addressed promptly. Writing is celebrated throughout the school through displays, assemblies and opportunities for publication.

Impact

The impact of The Write Stuff can be seen in the quality of pupils’ written work across the curriculum. Children demonstrate increasing confidence, independence and pride in their writing as they progress through the school.

As a result:

• Pupils write for a range of purposes with greater fluency and accuracy.
• Children develop a broad and ambitious vocabulary.
• Writing outcomes show clear progression from Reception to Year 6.
• Pupils are able to articulate their choices as writers and discuss the techniques they have used.
