Computing

Intent

At St Martin’s Catholic Primary School, we aim to instil a sense of enjoyment around using technology and to develop pupil’s appreciation of its capabilities and the opportunities technology offers to create, manage, organise and collaborate. As a school, we want to develop pupils’ confidence when encountering new technology. Through our curriculum we intend for our pupils to be responsible, online citizens, have a range of transferable skills that will ready pupils for the future and to become digitally competent.

Implementation

We use the Kapow Primary Computing scheme to ensure a broad and balanced coverage of the National Curriculum requirements. The scheme is organised into 5 key areas to create a cyclical route through which pupils can build on and develop their computing knowledge:

• Computer systems and networks
• Online Safety
• Creating Media
• Programming
• Data handling

Every child has their own device on which to access the computing curriculum and to create content which demonstrates their learning. Physical computing devices are also available for children to learn about physical programming.

Strong subject knowledge is vital for staff to be able to deliver a highly effective and robust computing curriculum. Each of the Kapow Primary Computing scheme lessons include teacher videos to develop subject knowledge and support ongoing CPD.

Impact

The impact of the Kapow Primary Computing scheme can be constantly monitored through formative and summative assessment opportunities. Each lesson includes guidance to support the subject leader in assessing pupils knowledge against the learning objectives and identify gaps in learning. Each unit also has a knowledge organiser and assessment quiz that can be used at the start and end of the unit to assess children’s progress.
